Read the following article on The Hidden Meltdown of Greenland
http://climate.nasa.gov/news/2342/

Respond to the following:
What is causing the fast melting of Greenland?  What can be done to slow or reverse it?

Your answer should be thoughtful and well-written.  It should be a minimum of 5 sentences.  It should not be the same as your classmate's response.

Due to the rise in warm ocean water, Greenland and Antarctic glaciers are melting more rapidly then ever. If the water was colder and contained more ice, then the glaciers would melt far slower. Except for the fact that the ocean water that is 350-400 ft deep contains warm, salty water that causes the glaciers to melt at an increasing rate. But there is hope, as many glaciers lay on giant earthen sills that are protecting the glaciers from the warm and therefore "harmful" water. The researchers of this project plan to continue to monitor the glaciers and collect data of the levels of the glaciers.

  2. With the rise in ocean water, Glaciers in greenland antartic glaciers are melting more rapidly than ever. If the water was colder contained more ice. The glaciers would melt not as fast. But there might be hope. glaciers still protected from the warmth and harmful water. The researchers monitor the plan to continue to collect data of the levels of glaciers.

  3. The fast melting of the Greenland is caused by a few different factors. The temperature around the world is slowly climbing which results in warmer oceans. The warm, salty ocean currents sweep across the ice glaciers and melt them. To slow or reverse the melting ice of Greenland, the water needs to be cooler and somehow less salty, like in more polar regions. A way to cool down the ocean is by controlling climate and change, and to do that we as a whole need to work together to care for the earth.

  4. Becuase of the rise in warm ocean water, Greenland and Antarctic glaciers are melting faster than usual. The ocean water that many glaciers lay on are starting to become warm and salty, which is causing these glaciers to melt more quickly. Unlike in the past, when glaciers were floating on cold, icy water. Although these glaciers are melting more rapidly than usual, there are many things researchers and scientists are trying to do to slow it down. Many glaciers still lay on earthen sills that are protecting the glaciers from the warmer water. Researchers are continuing to monitor the glaciers and collect data levels of them to slow down the melting of the glaciers.

The melting of Greenland is caused by the warmer and saltier water that has found it way to the areas around Greenland. The temperature of this water found 350-400 feet under water is melting this glaciers faster than anyone anticipated. To protect Greenland from a total meltdown the researchers of this specific project are working hard to keep track of what is exactly happening in the water. In order to change the fate of this land we can take better care of our planet to lower the temperature of the waters. If the ocean, at the top and at its depth, becomes cooler than the melting of the ice will slow exponentially.

  6. The fast melting of Greenland is because of the increasing ocean temperatures. Glaciologists have found that 350-400 meters below sea level the ocean is very warm and is eroding the glaciers very fast. Glaciers are no longer sitting in cold waters but now warm and salty water which is playing a huge role in melting. To prevent the melting of Greenland, scientists have been continuing their research. They are collecting data and monitoring the glaciers in hopes of finding a way to decrease the melting of Greenland.

  7. The glaciers of greenland are quickly melting due to a reason that isn't what one would think. The melting actually comes from 350-400 feet below sea level. The water there is much warmer than the surface water and undercuts these glaciers causing large pieces to become unstable and collapse. It is not quite clear what to do to slow this process down, even scientists aren't sure yet. Despite this, there may be a plan in the foreseeable future, as a team is going on a 5 year expedition to Greenland to collect as much data as they can in order to help make a plan to save the glaciers. As of now all we can do is try to reduce our carbon footprint and take better care of our planet as a whole.

  8. In Greenland, Glaciers are melting dramatically and are contributing to the rising of the sea level. Glaciologists have discovered the the melting is occurring 350-400 feet below the sea level. The warmer temperature water is contributing to the glaciers melting. Scientists have not found a way to stop or even make the melting process slower. At the moment, scientists have created a 5 year program in which they try to slow down the melting process. All we can do now is to wait on how the program does, and try to help the environment out as much as possible.

The fast melting of the Greenland is caused by a few different factors. The global temperature has been increasing due to the high co2 emissions that are released and because of this the oceans are becoming warmer. Glaciers in Greenland have been found to be deeper in the ocean than previously thought. The deeply situated warm salt water reaches the bottom of the glaciers and makes them unstable until they break. To solve this issue the ocean temperature has to be lowered. One way this can happen is by reducing our co2 emissions and planting more trees.

  10. Fresh water glaciers are melting in Greenland. Researchers have discovered that majority of the melting is occurring below sea level because of abnormally warm water. Currently scientists have no none way slowing down or stoping the melting, but there are measures being taken to learn everything about the glaciers. NASA has started a 5 year plan with the goal of stoping the malting process.

Greenland melt rates are increasing every day, and there is a distinct reason as to why this is occurring. Scientists have discovered that glaciers are grounded lower than previously recorded, and with this, the warm ocean water can go across them and erode them, unlike cold ocean water. This makes them less stable and more likely to disappear. The actual eroding occurs 350-400 ft below sea level because that is where the warm salty ocean water is located. To help prevent this glacial meltdown, scientists are on close watch of Greenland glaciers in a five-year expedition. We need to take better care of the planet to control the increasing climate and let the researchers gather the data to help preserve the Greenland glaciers.

Greenland's glaciers are melting fast due to the increase in the temperatures which is making the water warmer. To make this happen at a slower rate we can do many things as a society to change the environment. Firstly, we can begin by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide. We can prevent this with little things (we don't need to stop breathing to prevent this) we can plant more tress which take in CO2 and we can also burn things that aren't recyclable. Secondly, we can end the amount of pollution we are putting in the air from cars, factories etc. To help reduce it we can car pool, walk and bike places and even use public transportation.

  13. Greenland glaciers are melting and are increasing how much they are melting everyday. Scientist say that most of the glacier that are melting are below sea level which shows the air is cooler then in the water. Researchers have no way of stopping the speed at which the glaciers are melting at but they are going to watch the glaciers for five years to see if any changes occur that can give you an idea of what we can do to help. The main lesson out of this article is to take better care of our environment. If not this won't be the last article we read on glaciers melting.

Glaciers are rapidly melting in Greenland and its a few meters per day in the hot summer months. As the glaciers get deeper into the water they start to hit the warm and salty water melts away the ice much faster. These 350-400 meters are making a major difference to Greenland. There is a project funded by Nasa "OMG" or Ocean Melting Greenland that will gather more information. There isn't much we can do apart from spread awareness to others like the research has.

  15. Glaciers in Greenland are melting everyday. On some hot summer days, they melt a few meters. A study done by scientist shows that the base of the glaciers are deeper then they were before. This means that the glaciers are being eroded away by the warm water well below the surface. What the world can do to slow it is a five year NASA funded plan called OMG.

  16. In Greenland the Glaciers are melting a few meter everyday during the summer. Its cause by warm water 400 meters below water. But NASA has founded a 5 year plan to find out how to stop this growing problems. If NASA can't solve this problem, sea levels will rise 23 feet and our main source of fresh water will be gone. This is dangerous because we can loose our homes by the sea, and the animals that live there will no longer have a home either. We can help by reducing our waste and stop causing so much pollution.
