PLANTING TREES AT COAL MINES

Read the following article:

Answer the following question.  Your response should be thoughtful and well-written.  It should not be the same as one of your classmates.  It should be at least 5 sentences.

Do you think  planting millions of trees on mine sites to offset coal’s carbon pollution and at the same time continue mining is a good or bad idea? Why? Explain your position.

  1. Planting millions of trees on mine sites to offset coal’s carbon pollution and at the same time continue mining is a good idea. Because one is very bad for the environment and the other is helpful for the environment. Coal which is a fossil fuel is burned and that gas travels up into the ozone layer. By growing tree's it produces carbon dioxide which is good for the environment.

  2. Planting these trees on mine sites is not a good idea. The trees would turn out to be weak and feeble due to the unfavorable conditions of the soil as well as the highly polluted air around them, which they are trying to fix. If the trees were to be plated at an active coal mine site they would render useless. However, the trees should be planted in the end. These trees could be planted on retired mining sites to clean up what is left of the carbon in the air and renew the soil.

  3. The plan to plant trees on mine sites is not a very good idea. Although planting trees is never a bad idea the soil on these sites is not in the best conditions possible. This soil will not completely support the trees and will make them not as useful as they would be in other places. Trees are part of great plan to help the environment but they would make a bigger impact if they live longer and grow taller. The soil they would be planted in would kill them quicker and we could be right back where we started with plenty of unwanted carbon lurking in the air. In the end I think that the trees can make a lasting impact but not if they are planted on these sites so we should find suitable places to plant long lasting, healthy trees.

  4. The idea of planting trees on active mine sites is not a good idea. As said in the article, it is hard to plant near mines because of the polluted soil. By planting trees, it barely helps reduce the emission of fossil fuels from the mines. The trees will not be able to keep up with the emission of the mines which then contradicts the reason to have trees planted on the mining sites. Though we might not be able to plant near mines, the need for trees to help reduce the burning of fossil fuels is greatly needed. Trees should be planted in more strategic spots to where they can actually make a difference in the environment.

If mining companies were to plant trees on a mining site, it would not be enough to offset the carbon pollution. Though it is a good thought, the sites are not a sufficient place to place trees. The soil there is not good enough to help the trees because of the magnesium and other metals, especially compared to other locations. Also, when the trees die, because of the infertile soil, they will release carbon to the already polluted area. They wouldn't be able to offset the amount of carbon the mines make either. It would be best if trees were planted elsewhere so that they can actually be efficient to the earth.

  7. The Patriot Coal, coal mining company, is filing for bankruptcy. The head of a environmental group is planing to purchase the still operational mining sites and planting millions of trees on these sites. This whole idea is not one that is very good, even though the trees may reduce the carbon being released by the soil. However because of the pollution in the soil there is a large risk that this whole idea might just result in in nothing but millions of dead trees releasing more carbon in to the atmosphere.

  8. I do not think this would be a good idea. The soil on these mine sites is not fit to keep millions of trees healthy or to help them grow to their full potential. Trees are only helpful to the environment when they are tall and live long. Planting trees on these kind of sites would be useless because the soil would harm the trees and make them die quicker. Overall, trees should not be planted in these sites because it does more harm than help.

  9. The idea of planting millions of trees to offset the production of pollution from coal is a good idea. If the company plants millions of tree that is enough to cancel out the pollution it is a great idea. This would make it seem like the mine does not even exist. Plus, with government checking the carbon footprint of companies, this companies carbon footprint would be substantially less and would aid them in helping the environment instead of hurting it. Although, one way that it could be bad would be if the buyer of the company took down the trees for more space for the mine.

  10. Planting millions of trees on mine sites to offset coal’s carbon pollution and at the same time continue mining is not a good idea. First off, the trees will make a little impact. The soil does not contain enough nutrients to provide the trees with, therefore the trees will do less than on average in other places. Trees in order to function best as possible need to grow to their full capacity to really make a difference and at coal mines they can not do so. Therefore, growing trees on coal mines is not a good idea as growing them elsewhere.

  11. I do not think that planting millions of trees on mine sites to offset coal’s carbon pollution is a good idea. The soil above the mines is polluted with minerals and makes it difficult to plant trees. The amount of tree's it would take to make a large difference in the co2 quantity in the atmosphere is a staggering number and makes the project unrealistic. Lastly, although this company is trying to pitch this idea for business, the federal Environmental Protection Agency does not accept forest-planting as a way to shrink coal companies carbon foot-print. This proves that even the government thinks that this idea is unrealistic and would not work. Planting trees on mine sites are only effective to a certain degree, yet if you plant those trees in other locations it would be much more effective.

  12. Planting trees at mine sites is not a good idea. Since the soil is not very good due to the magnesium in it and the air is very polluted, the trees would not grow very strong if any. The weak trees will die off and release more carbon into the air furthering the problem. The trees would therefore be useless. On the other hand, it is a good idea to still plant a lot of trees to clean the air of already existing carbon. Perhaps on a non active coal mine, trees could planted to lessen the air pollution from the previous use of the mine.

  13. Planting millions of trees at mine sites is not a good idea. The air and soil near these areas are polluted, so it very unlikely that the trees will thrive in these areas. Also the trees will only offset some of the pollution done by the mining, so the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will still be added to. However I like the iniative that this company is trying to take as far as helping the environment, and if this idea, or perhaps one they try in the future, then hopefully they will influence other companies to something similar

  14. If someone says that they were planting millions of trees you would think that is a great idea. But it would not be a good idea if they were planting on a mining site. One reason would be that it is on a mining site so the soil is infertile and polluted with many minerals like magnesium would not be good for the trees. So when the trees die then they will release more carbon into the air which will not help with the offset on carbon pollution. Planting trees is a good thing for the Earth but they should plant them not on a mining site but where they can help the Earth.

  15. Planting millions of trees near mine sites to offset the production of coal is not a good idea think about the Earth. Don't plant trees in a terrible location if you want to plant trees plant time in a better location where they are useful to the Earth. The soil is not good enough because of the magnesium and it causes the air to be polluted which is another reason why the location is not good for a tree to be living in. Finally there is no point to plant trees if all that is going to happen is the trees will die because of the air pollution and won't have enough to cancel out with the coal production

  16. Before human civilization began there was about 5.6 trillion trees and now theres only about 3.1 trillion. This is due to humans clearing forest to build mines, houses, building and use the wood to make other things. His plan to plant trees around mines to reduce the amount the coal pollution is a step in the right direction. But I believe instead of planting millions of trees around coal mines, they should plant them somewhere else were they can grow in a better environment. This alone is not enough to change the worlds pollution problem but its a good way to start. People need to help out to by not driving and using fossil fuels that pollute earth.
